Waves at Matsushima

Tawaraya Sōtatsu 俵屋宗達
Color painting formed from a pair of screens arranged horizontally side-by-side, each with six, narrow vertical panels, of rocky outcroppings on the right screen and a pine tree in the upper register of the left screen, all emerging from turbulent waves depicted in white pigment. The rocks are colored with brown, green, and blue pigments, with small pine trees on top. Two irregular solid gold shapes with partial black outlines, a smaller one in the lower left and a larger one in the center of the upper register, spanning across both screens. A thin rectangular border of blue and gold textile surrounds each screen on all sides.
Pair of six-panel folding screens; ink, color, gold, and silver on paper; 65 3/8 × 145 5/8 in (each). Public Domain
