It is impossible to know how many artists created art during the 250 years of the Edo period, especially because the Kanō School and other art schools employed thousands of artists and many others never signed their work. This site features eighteen prominent artists, as well as unattributed works marked as "Unsigned."
The artists' names are listed last name first, as is customary in Japan, and Edo artists were referred to by their first names, so Maruyama Ōkyo was known as Ōkyo, and Soga Shōhaku was known as Shōhaku.
